How often should I have my teeth checked?
Between 6 - 12 months, depending on the patient's needs. If calculus builds up quickly, cleaning may be required 6 monthly.
Why do my gums bleed?
This is due to retained plaque caused by inadequate brushing technique. Bacteria in the plaque causes a gum inflamatory reaction (gingivitis) of swelling and bruising.
What causes tooth decay?
Sugar in the diet - especially sticky foods and soft drink. If plaque is left on the teeth the bacteria produces acids from the sugar, which then attacks the teeth. Snacking between meals extends the time that this occurs.
When should I brush my teeth.
At least twice a day and within 20 mins after meals.
Should I use a fluoride toothpaste?
Yes. Fluoride strengthens the tooth enamel to help fight decay. We have the correct amount of fluoride in the water supply, but fluoride in toothpaste also helps. Children under six years should only use the lower concentration of fluoride toothpaste available. Always spit out and avoid rinsing after brushing, so as not to wash away all the fluoride.
Remember: It is not a good idea to drink bottled water, particularly for children as it does not contain fluoride.
